Ginseng Herb

Asian ginseng also known as Chinese or Korean ginseng is a member of the Araliaceae family which also includes American ginseng which is native to east and central North America and Siberian ginseng.

Asian ginseng has been used for centuries as an herbal medicine in Asia.

The root is used for medicinal purposes; it is generally harvested in the autumn from plants which are six years old.

When the root is air dried, it produces white ginseng and when it is steamed and dried it produces the more potent red root.

American ginseng is sweeter to the taste and is used for anxiety, fatigue and insomnia whilst Asian ginseng is used for loss of energy, fatigue and weakness. Ginseng contains ginsenosides; Asian ginseng tends to have more stimulating Rg1 ginsenosides whilst American has more relaxing Rb1 ginsenosides.
